Rest

Exodus 33:14
The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." (NIV)

The Israelites were not an easy group of people to govern, and Moses was finding that out all too quickly. His problems were numerous as he led God’s people to the Promised Land.

It was difficult for the Israelites to deal with the changes they were experiencing from living in houses while they were in Egypt to living in tents as they made their way toward a land that not one of them had ever seen before.

We’re not talking about just a few families. Altogether, there were most likely well over three million people. That’s a lot of campers crossing the desert from Egypt to Canaan!

Organizing such a large number of campers (because that was what they were…living in tents) was no easy task. Decisions, like where would they pitch their tents and how would they distribute water, weighed heavily on Moses’ shoulders. It was all terribly difficult and physically exhausting.

Moses was trying his best to follow God’s command to lead the Israelites out from slavery. But, he knew he could not do this alone. Moses sought God’s favor and help, and God promised His constant presence and rest.

When we are exhausted, when morning comes too soon, when our work seems insurmountable, God offers His rest and reminds us of His presence…just as He did with Moses. God gives us only what He knows we can handle. He will see to it that we are not burdened more than we can bear.

Rest deeply, recharge, and rejuvenate, that you may serve the Lord with great eagerness.

God, give peace to Your servants. We often feel weary and drained. Fill us with Your Spirit, so that we may overflow with boundless compassion and grace. Send Your Spirit in grace and mercy, so that we may find our rest in You. In Your holy Son’s name we pray. Amen.
