Kept in Our Heart

Proverbs 3:1-2
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. (NIV)

As we were growing up, we learned that there are things that are right, and that there are things which are wrong. Whether we were at home, in church or chapel, in Sunday school or Bible class, any time we heard God’s Word, we learned what God wanted us to do.

The same is true for us today. God is still teaching us every day. However, God wants us to do more than just remember His rules. He wants the rules to be a permanent part of our everyday lives, from the time we get up in the morning until the time that we go to bed at night. He wants us to think about what His Word means in our lives, and then show that we understand His Word by what we say and do. We should reflect His Word in all of our thoughts and actions, no matter where we are.

When we want to see a movie at the theater, on TV or on a DVD, we need to ask ourselves if this is a movie Jesus would want us to be looking at. When we are angry and want to hit someone or say a bad word, we need to ask ourselves if this is what God would want us to say or do.

By asking ourselves this question, and doing the right thing, we are making Him Number One in our lives and hearts. We can only do this with God’s help. Then, when people watch what we are doing, and see that we are following Jesus’ example, we are actually sharing God with those people around us.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word and commandments. Help us to listen to them, think about them, so that we can follow them and spread Your love by what we say and do. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
