When God Shows Up

When God Shows Up

Isaiah 6:1-2a & 4
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were two seraphs, each with six wings. …At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. (NIV)

What would it be like to have a visit from God? Would it be a blast of loud noise? Would angels show up and start singing (very loud) praises to God? Would the room fill with smoke and shake all over, so it would look like the walls might collapse? That’s about what I would expect to see when God came to visit, and that’s what the Old Testament prophet Isaiah saw when God came to see him.

But the Bible says that God is everywhere, and He is with us all the time. We don’t always see smoke, feel shaking, or hear angels singing. Sometimes God comes to us very quietly. It may be when we are quiet and praying, or listening to Christian music. We may feel God is with us when we are in church listening to the Bible readings, or hearing the pastor’s sermon, or receiving Holy Communion.

You might feel really close to God when you are outside in a natural area. Maybe when you are by the ocean or a large lake, and you feel so small compared to God’s creation. Maybe it’s when you are up in the mountains, and other parts of the world seem so small and faraway.

When you feel like you are in God’s presence in a special way, thank Him. Say a special prayer that you know He sent Jesus to save you and the Holy Spirit to live in your heart. And listen with your heart and spirit. Maybe He has something He wants you to do, a person to be friends with, or a good deed to help someone. When God shows up, listen and follow Him.

Dear Lord God, help us always to know that You are with us. Help us to do those things that You want us to do; help others and tell them about You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
