I Did What?

I Did What?

Acts 26:9
I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. (NIV)

In the first part of the New Testament book of Acts, Paul thought God wanted him to punish people who followed Jesus of Nazareth. In Jerusalem, he locked up His followers and sentenced them to death. He chased them down when they tried to escape.

Later in Acts, Jewish leaders complained to the Roman leaders, labeling Paul an agitator among the Jews and a ringleader of the sect of Nazarenes…the followers of Jesus. They even called him a pestilent fellow.

Wow! What a change! Who would have guessed that this enemy of Christians would become one of the most important people in all of Christianity? Who would guess he would be defending his Christian beliefs to Agrippa, the king of Judea? Certainly, not Paul.

Paul was convinced his work against Christians was meaningful and important, and he devoted a lot of time and effort to it. But, all that changed when he met Jesus face-to-face on the road to Damascus.

What are some things in your life that had great meaning and importance at one time, but have been replaced by things that have greater meaning and importance…especially since you came to know Jesus?

Take this time to reflect on the experiences and challenges God has guided you through. Think about who you were 10 years ago and consider the many ways you have undoubtedly changed. Reflect on the many gifts and blessings you have enjoyed. Paul used his experiences to help him become a better witness to the power of Christ. Can you do the same?

God, work in us that we may serve and testify, so that others may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to the love of God, and so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and be blessed by faith in You. Help us as You have helped Your followers throughout history. Amen.
