Body Parts
August 2, 2010
Michael De Dominick, Ministry Consultant – ORBody Parts Romans 12:4-5
Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”(NIV)When you stand in the bathroom and look at yourself in a mirror, aren’t you amazed at how many parts there are to your body?
There’s your head, with all its different parts, like eyes, a nose, mouth and ears. Maybe even a moustache or a beard, if you’re a guy. And then, there are your arms and legs, hands and feet, shoulders, back and chest. Many, many parts…and those are just the parts you can see.
Inside there are lots more parts. Each of you has a brain, a heart, lungs, stomach and kidneys. So many parts make up the body of you…and each part has its own purpose and function to make your body work.
God gives us different functions in the Body of Christ. It can be easy to become jealous of the gifts God has given to other Christians. Your friend might have a wonderful singing voice, but you do not. Another friend might read Bible stories better than you can.
You might think, “How come I can’t to that?”
That’s a fair question, and OK to ask. However, if you become jealous of your friends because of their gifts, then it’s not OK.
The Bible offers an image of the Body of Christ, full of people from different walks of life, with different skills and talents, each created uniquely for the works God prepares for them to do. Each person’s gift and talents are important to the Church.
God has given each of His people gifts to use to glorify Him. Take joy in whatever gift He has given you, for your contribution is vital to the Body of Christ.
God, may we be fully functional parts of the Body of Christ. May we encourage other members of the Body as they do their work, and may we take joy in Your glorification. You alone have redeemed creation. You are most holy. May Your Spirit strengthen and encourage us in faith. May we enjoy the freedom of Your grace. Amen.
