Worthy of the Calling
August 27, 2010
Pamela Martens, Ministry Consultant – CAWorthy of the Calling Ephesians 4:1-3
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (NIV)Before, during and after Jesus lived on earth, the Roman Empire was the “leader” of the world. They ruled with cruelty, force, intimidation, hurt, pain and threats. No one could speak a mean word about Rome, Caesar, Nero or any leader of the Roman Empire for fear of death.
Many of the people who lived in the Roman Empire were slaves who were burdened with hopelessness as they were sold like cattle. Those who were not slaves carved out small livings as farmers, trades-people and laborers.
Ephesus was a city in the Roman province of Asia. As the devout follower of Jesus, Paul was a prisoner of Rome when he wrote his epistle (letter) to the Christians at the city of Ephesus. Paul sat in a Roman jail as a prisoner of Caesar, and he never complained about being in chains. Paul knew he was one of the chosen people, and he rejoiced in the light of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Paul filled his jail cell with the aura of joy and ultimate triumph.
Yet during those times, the Roman Empire was beginning to fall apart. Crime, political instability, civil unrest and big changes were causing the Empire to crumble from within. Paul did not complain about being prisoner. He did not express fear and hatred. Paul was an example to them. Paul knew that, even though Rome was falling apart, the church would remain strong in Jesus Christ.
So, what did Paul write to the Christians at Ephesus?
He told them to remain humble, gentle and patient. In that way, they would be worthy of their calling as followers of Jesus. Paul’s advice to the Ephesians is good advice for you and me today, no matter what our circumstances may be.
Dear Father in heaven, we want to thank You for Paul. His bravery and his faith are wonderful examples to us. Please help us to remember that Jesus walks beside us every day, leading us out from the shadows and into His light. In our Savior’s name we pray. Amen.
