Just What We Need
July 1, 2010
Harold Kopplin, Chaplaincy Representative – WIJust What We Need Psalm 16:5
LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. (NIV)People are always looking for things that make them happy. We often want bigger or better stuff than we already have. Most folks want lots of money, and no matter how much they get, they always want more. Many believe that real joy comes from how much we have of earthly things or earthly treasures. Those things include: bigger, more expensive places to live; fancier clothes; lots of things to play with, like electronic games, computer stuff, and I-phones.
We want to eat the best, wear the best, look the best, live the best, and all of that should make us feel the best. Wrong! Acquiring things won’t really make us happy forever.
Things wear out, get old, are lost or stolen, and go out of style. Even if you should make or receive a lot of money, it won’t make you happy all by itself. Also, we just said what also happens to things you can purchase with cash. And you can’t take money with you when you die.
Being in companionship or fellowship with the Lord, however, gives us true benefits and joy. It gives us happiness and peace now while we live on this earth, and true, eternal joy in heaven when our lives on this earth are ended.
Today’s Bible verse says that the Lord gives us just what we need to live as His people. We receive the right stuff. He calls it our portion or cup. The verse also says that what God gives us makes us secure, that is, He keeps us safe in Him.
Right now, He gives us forgiveness of sins, life in His family, and keeps us safe from sin, death, and hell. The best gift or part of our portion that we get is eternal life in heaven. Jesus died on the cross and rose again so we could receive that free gift.
God gives us what we truly need now and forever. Rejoice and share that great news!
Lord, thank You for giving us our perfect portion for life now and forever. Amen.
