God Gives Us Government Leaders
July 5, 2010
Jeanne M. Dicke, Ministry Consultant – MN & WIGod Gives Us Government Leaders Romans 13:1a
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. (NIV)Since we just celebrated the 4th of July, let’s take some time to talk about what God says about government and the people who lead our government. We hear a lot of news about our President every day. He is the most important leader of our government. He has a huge job to do. We depend on him to make many important choices for us. He needs us to pray for him everyday.
Closer to where we live, there might be a government leader we call a mayor. A mayor is someone who is in charge of a city or a town. Who is the mayor of the town or city where you live? Have you ever talked to your mayor?
A mayor’s job is also very important. A mayor makes sure a town or city is a safe place for us to live. They make sure the roads are in good repair. They make sure that the garbage is picked up, and that the water we drink is clean. They make sure that we have safe parks and places to have fun.
Whether the government leader is the President of our country or the mayor of our town, the Bible tells us that God is the one who put them in charge of us. God gives them the authority to lead us. If we didn’t have government leaders, our lives would be a mess. We need to listen to our leaders and show respect for them. If we don’t agree with them, we can politely ask them to listen to us. A good leader will listen to us and try their best to help us. If a leader is really bad, they will lose their job or not be elected again.
Think about leaders whom you can pray for today. Ask God to bless them and help them do their job to the best of their ability. Maybe you could even write notes to let the leaders know that you prayed for them.
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us leaders in our government. Help us to listen to them and show respect for them. Help us to speak up and tell them when we have a problem. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
