Christian Living, Part 2

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (NIV)

Yesterday, we learned that we have been chosen by God to be His because He loves us. Today, we discover from this verse how this should change the way we live.

The verse tells us that we should be compassionate, kind, humble, meek and patient. In fact, we should put these qualities on just like we put on our clothes.

When we put on different clothes, it changes the way we look. When we put on these qualities, it changes the way we act. It changes the way people think about who we are. When we put on these qualities, we become more like Jesus, and we show others that we are God’s children.

Jesus was always kind to others. He showed compassion towards all who were sick, hungry, lonely or in need. He did this because He loved them. When we are kind and compassionate toward other people, we do things that make them feel loved…just like Jesus makes us feel loved. This helps to teach others about the love of God.

How do we show kindness to others? Maybe we can be someone’s friend. We can say something to encourage someone who is feeling down. We can give a hungry person something to eat. We can take care of someone who is sick. We can tell someone about God’s love for them. These are all examples of kindness. Can you think of other examples?

When we put on humility, that means we do not brag about ourselves, or what we have done. We realize that all that we have, and all that we are, is because of God. We cannot do anything special on our own without God’s help.

Meekness goes along with humility. We will talk about meekness, humility and patience tomorrow.

Dear Lord, thank You for loving us and making us Your own. Help us to wear the qualities that will show Your love to others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
