Keep Your Spirit Alive

Keep Your Spirit Alive

John 7:37-39
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (NIV)

There was hardly any water in Jesus' day, yet water was as much a necessity for life then as it is today. It did not rain often, and there were few lakes and streams. Water was crucial to the survival of each home. Each house had to have water to prepare food, wash and clean. To help them keep a supply of water, they had tanks called cisterns to collect whatever rain fell.

Just as our physical body needs water to continue living, so does our spirit. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is the Living Water needed by the spiritual part of each person. Without Jesus, the soul will dry up, and in time it will die. We get spiritually thirsty, and we try to satisfy this thirst with many things which can make us happy for a short time, like money, fancy cars, the newest gadget in technology. And let’s not forget trying to keep up with what our friends have.

Yet in the end, our souls become dry again. But the Good News is that the only thing that can truly quench the thirst of the spirit is the Living Water, Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the only One who can satisfy the thirst of the spirit. Any thing or any one else will only wear you out and leave your spirit thirsty again. For that reason, Jesus is what your spirit needs in order for you to be able to live eternally with Him in heaven. Without the Living Water, Jesus Christ, your spirit will die just as surely as your body would, if you did not drink any water or other liquids.

So, quench your spiritual thirst with Jesus. Jesus is the only one who can keep your spirit alive. Look for Him each day.

Dear Father in heaven, help us each day to keep our spirits alive with the Living Water, Jesus Christ. Please help us to tell everyone what we have learned today. Jesus Christ is our Savior, the Living Water we need! Amen.
