Bethesda Awards 14 Scholarships for 2017-18

Bethesda Lutheran Communities, in partnership with the Bethesda Auxiliary, is pleased to announce its scholarship winners for the 2017-18 academic school year.  

In all, 14 scholarships totaling $32,000 were given to Lutheran high school, college and seminary students who have a career interest in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. 

Seminary ($3,000) 

  • Brock Schmeling, Mandan, North Dakota, graduated from North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota, with a bachelor of science degree in history and philosophy. He is a first-year student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Brock, son of Randy and Dotti Schmeling, is a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mandan, North Dakota. 
  • Mark Renner, Delaware, Ohio, graduated from Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts. He is a first-year student at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Mark, son of Charles and Jennie Renner and Becky and Bob Hinschlager, is a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marysville, Ohio. 
  • Scott Hedtke, Fort Wayne, Indiana, graduated from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois, with a bachelor of arts degree in theology. He is a first-year student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Scott, son of the Rev. Robert and Diana Hedtke, is a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  
  • Tim Walsh, Onalaska, Wisconsin, graduated from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, with a bachelor of arts degree in biblical languages. He will be attending Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin, in the fall. Tim, son of David and Beth Walsh, is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Onalaska, Wisconsin. 
  • Wolf Parsons, Mankato, Minnesota, graduated from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, with a bachelor of science education in mathematics and also received a pre-seminary certification from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. He is a second-year student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin. Wolf, son of Michael and Darla Parsons, is a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Spearfish, South Dakota. 

College ($3,000) 

  • Daniel Spaude, Antigo, Wisconsin, is a sophomore at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, majoring in pre-seminary studies. Daniel, son of Michael and Rachel Spaude, is a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Antigo, Wisconsin. 
  • Elaina Hanley, Rockledge, Florida, is a junior at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, majoring in health science. Elaina, daughter of Scott and Shelley Sutherland, is a member of Faith “Viera” Lutheran Church in Rockledge, Florida. 
  • Emily Dabrow, Santa Ana, California, is a sophomore at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, majoring in communication sciences and disorders and liberal studies. Emily, daughter of Christopher and Andrea Dabrow, is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Orange, California.  
  • Jamie Nikodym, Red Cloud, Nebraska, is a sophomore at Concordia University Nebraska in Seward, Nebraska, majoring in early childhood inclusive education. Jamie, daughter of John and Janice Nikodym, is a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud, Nebraska.  

High School ($500) 

  • Gabrielle Kuehl, Watertown, Wisconsin, is a graduate of Watertown High School in Watertown, Wisconsin. She plans to pursue a career in special education. Gabrielle, daughter of Todd and Pam Kuehl, is a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lebanon, Wisconsin. 
  • Hailey BeBeau, Gidden, Wisconsin, is a graduate of Chequamegon High School in Park Falls, Wisconsin. She will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the fall and plans to pursue a career in psychology. Hailey, daughter of Dave and Rachelle BeBeau, is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gidden. 
  • Hayden Rensner, Effingham, Illinois, is a home school graduate. She plans to pursue a career as a case manager for adults with disabilities. Hayden, daughter of Jason and Kris Rensner, is a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway, Illinois. 
  • Timothy Oberdieck, Lanesville, Indiana, is a graduate of Lanesville Jr.-Sr. High School, Lanesville, Indiana. He will be attending Concordia University Nebraska in Seward, Nebraska, and plans to pursue a career as a director of Christian education. Timothy, son of Brian and Emma Oberdieck, is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lanesville, Indiana.
